When I talk with people about their health and wellness concerns I focus on one of three approaches to aromatherapy intake- or, depending on the individual, I may combine two or three.
What do I mean by intake?
It’s a clinical term from my years as a psychotherapist. Can’t shake it. So pardon the formality for an aromatherapy process that is extremely collaborative and self- empowering.
When someone approaches me about what essential oil(s) to use, the question is often focused on a specific condition. “I have arthritis. Is there an oil that can help with that?”
As an wellness coach and aromatherapist, I don’t prescribe. I don’t advise either. And I don’t attach any conversation about wellness to a condition that can be diagnosed. For one, essential oils are not medicine. And two, I coach from a holistic perspective always staying above the wellness line.
Wellness Wheel and Chakra Chart
I created my Essential Wellness Wheel to assist people with lifestyle change. Essential Oils top the list. And essential oils can also be used to support the other nine points of the plan.
I also use my Essential Chakra Chart as a reference to the use of essential oils.
And finally, I use Body Systems.
Essentially (no pun intended) I ask the person to review the Essential Wellness Wheel or the Essential Chakra Chart or the Body Systems and ask the person- what resonates? Whatever resonates for the person is usually a good starting point. Where they are drawn is where we begin, and we discuss oils that can support that wellness point, that chakra or that body system.
This provides an opportunity for aroma-education, self-awareness and proactive choice. Incorporating essential oils is a lifestyle change. Some people go all in with gusto, others ease in. For the person that eases in, approaching with a full-on plan may be overwhelming. For the person who wants to go all in, the various intakes can provide focus and direction.

I presented this triangle in a workshop for nurses so I have included the workshop outline below.
