Have you been bit by the selfie bug? It’s everywhere- not just people’s selfies but deconstructionist articles about what selfies are all about. And the apps that are available to “enhance” one’s eyes, lips, cheekbones, skin tone… it’s a different world. And who really looks like that anyway?
Well, I occasionally take selfies- usually to show my girlfriend my new hairstyle. I don’t ever wear makeup and I certainly can’t imagine using an app to give the appearance of a made-up face when I don’t bother to apply it myself.
In this selfie, I was attempting to capture my eyebrows. I had visited a salon that day in hopes of an eyebrow wax that would not leave my skin red, hot and smarting. And I am thrilled to say that feat was accomplished thanks to LaDonna at West 84 Hair Co. I gave up makeup long ago due to allergies and sensitivities. And yes, I have tried many natural lines of makeup and finally gave up. But in the giving up of my made-up face, I learned to love me and my natural look even more. Beauty comes from the inside out they say. Brows though, that’s a different story. I can’t stand the pluck routine and I have been determined for a couple of years to find someone who could wax my brows without taking my skin off too.
I digress. At any rate, in my attempt to take a good pic of my brow job without that freshly seared and burned look, I captured the selfie you see here. Blurry and hazy but something about it captivated me. I see me in a different light- I see me glowing. I see my own aura in a selfie mistake that most would delete as an epic selfie fail. My hair is a mess, my gray is screaming loudly… and I took it from my new phone so it looks like some sort of filter was used as well. Despite all of that, I see me.
So what’s my point?
The next time you are quick to discard that less-than-perfect portrait, look again. Find yourself. Look into your own eyes. See your own beauty. Hell, in this pic I look like one hot mess, but it’s me.
Be proud of who you are- old, young, gray, made up, natural, curly, straight, dressed up, casual, sleepy, awake, spiritual, thinker, intuitive, seeker.
Oh, and here’s a brow tip:
After you have had your brows waxed, braided, plucked or ransacked, apply a dilute solution of lavender essential oil. Just add 10 drops of lavender essential oil to a 10 ml roll-on bottle filled with your favorite carrier oil. Mine is sweet almond.
