A few years ago I received a couple of Himalayan salt lamps as gifts.
“These lamps greatly improve air quality,” I was told.
Googled it.
I set about to do my research (Googled it…) and I was hard pressed to find any significant research that wasn’t anecdotal. Himalayan salt has been touted as a cure-all for everything that ails and salt lamps are said to create ions that make air quality better. Scientists say that the ions produced by salt lamps are not the negative ions produced by clinically tested apparatus. See this article from Columbia University for more information.
Still, there are those who say salt lamps DO improve air quality. Himalayan salt crystal is hygroscopic, helping to remove moisture from the air. For those of us with lung disorders, this can be an added bonus to the beauty salt lamps bring to any room. I can’t say for sure that the salt lamps contribute to the good air quality in my home but I can say that the lamps create a nice enough ambiance that it is worth having them and they can’t help but add to good feng shui!
Where to find a GOOD one
If you want a good Himalayan Salt Lamp (or any other Himalayan salt product) I recommend So Well. They have a great reputation and a beautiful selection. They aren’t just those rough rock looking lumps on a stand anymore (although they have their own charm). They come in many shapes and sizes. My favorite is the pyramid shaped lamp. Perhaps that is because the pyramid is a symbol for the integration of self-and soul. I can’t promise you will breathe better but I bet your spirits will lift from the radiance these lamps add to a room.
I live in a studio apartment with approximately 600 square feet of living space and I have 3 lamps in my apartment. They create ambiance and in the late night they serve as night lights.
The salt lamps make me feel better. I don’t know why. I don’t need proof. It might just be because they are pretty!
