In this 12-hour course, we draw inspiration from themes and best practices in the supervision of spiritual direction professionals. While acknowledging the distinct disciplines and scopes of practice between spiritual direction supervision and clinical supervision for mental health practitioners, the focus is on integrating effective approaches from spiritual direction supervision into case consultation for therapists and clinical supervisors. This includes exploring transpersonal and Jungian themes, along with providing explicit examples of how spirituality can be incorporated into supervision. The course also addresses issues of transference and countertransference.
Course Description
At the heart of this learning process is case conceptualization, approached through a spiritual lens. The course delves into both implicit and explicit spiritual content, allowing supervisors to discern when to broaden or narrow their focus while working with supervisees and clients.
Participants are required to provide a concise written summary of 10 client sessions, serving as material for introspective and experiential writing exercises. The course is designed to be self-paced and online, with instructor feedback provided after completion.
Course Facilitator
DeeAnna Merz Nagel, course facilitator, is a licensed mental health counselor, certified clinical supervisor and certified coach. She holds a doctorate in multi-faith spiritual direction. She combines her clinical supervision skills with her skills as a spiritual coach and spiritual director to bring new light to clinical supervision training. DeeAnna describes her approach as progressive, inter-spiritual, and holistically based.
