I recently received my copy of Gattefosse’s Aromatherapy: The First Book on Aromatherapy and while there are many many books on the market about essential oils and aromatherapy, this is the quintessential guide and the first true book published about aromatherapy.
The first edition came out in 1937 written by René-Maurice Gattefossé, a french chemist. His father, Louis Gattefossé founded the company Gattefossé in France 1n 1880. The company specializes in the creation, development, manufacture, and marketing of specialty ingredients and innovative formulation solutions for the Health and Beauty industries worldwide.
Rene headed the company after his father. Inventive and visionary, he brought his scientific methodology to the business. Creator of Perfumes and Scents and inventor of aromatherapy, he has marked the history of Gattefossé through his progressive thinking.
In succession, Henri-Marcel Gattefossé, his son, widened the scope of the business by adding plant extracts to the catalogue. Passionate about science and people, he worked closely with researchers in hospitals and universities around the world.
The Gattefossé Foundation conducts aromatherapy research and for those of us who are beecoming more and more intrigued by the intersection of essential oils and health, their research is very important. The research to date includes clinical trials conducted in hospitals so aromatherapy is nothing to sneeze at.
My Essential oils and Aromatherapy books collection is growing and I love reading about all of the versatile ways essential oils can enhance a wellness lifestyle. There is so much information about essential oils now- it seems everywhere you turn. But I love reading the beginnings of this now burgeoning field. The wellness industry is bubbling over because of essential oils. I am glad to be a part of that movement.
By the way, I am on a search for a first edition of this book. Can’t find one so if you have one stashed away somewhere that you are willing to part with do drop me a line.
In the meantime, I’ve added to the aromatherapy literature myself!
