Young Living Essential Oils has a mission statement that I love and it is a mission I can embrace. I have blogged about this before- How Can I be of Service? – and I as I revisit the mission from time to time, I will likely write about it again. And again.
Mission: We honor our stewardship to champion nature’s living energy, essential oils, by fostering a a community of healing and discovery while inspiring individuals to wellness, purpose, and abundance.
As a point of reference, I offer synonyms for the word, foster
encourage, promote, further, stimulate, advance, forward, cultivate, nurture, strengthen, enrich
The concept of fostering fits right in with the philosophy of coaching. And I prefer to coach my team members- team members who are inspired toward wellness and team members who are inspired toward abundance.
Even the word, “team” can conjure up a competitive or corporate environment. And yes, some people thrive to compete or to emulate corporate structure but that doesn’t really fit who I am.
Of course, there are Young Living teams who pride themselves on being collaborative, even borrowing from a feminist business model. But at the end of the day, if we are using words like, team, team leader, upline, downline, rank, (Star, Senior Star, Executive, Sliver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond, Crown Diamond, Royal Crown Diamond) a culture of competition can be difficult to avoid. Sometimes it just breaks down to semantics, but semantics are powerful.
Using a Coach Approach
I like the words community and tribe. In fact, Young Living’s mission statement says, .. fostering a community…
And I like the idea of using the coaching paradigm to cultivate a Young Living downline and create egalitarian relationships. A community- a tribe- thrives when being coached on parallel ground. The idea is that everyone brings equal gifts to the table. Coaches guide, but even more, coaches stimulate and nurture, always with reciprocal exchanges. The coaching culture suggests that all parties will advance and be enriched.
Some of these shifts in language and concepts are subtle of course but when we embody coaching principles, the Young Living mission just happens. For me, it is not about finding the next builder or “digging for diamonds” or creating the perfect script for a gathering. It truly is about promoting the mission of Young Living and when I stay within the mindset of a Wellness Coach- listening and sharing, the journey is so much more enriching.
Collaboration is Key
This is NOT your old school network marketing.
This is my approach. This is what works for me:
Collaboration, consensus, heart first. Being present and attentive to a person’s need, whether that be a question about a single oil purchase or an inquiry about how to incorporate essential oils into a revenue stream…
I strive everyday to remember how I want to feel. I want to feel fulfilled. And when I share about wellness, healthy living, essential oils, mindfulness and intuitive living, I feel fulfilled. Mission accomplished.
Teamwork makes the Dream work!
